Is it worth the time researching warranties?

So you think you’ve done thorough research on the best new tires to purchase for your car, but how much time have you factored in researching warranties? Perhaps you checked a “yes or no” box for simply whether the tire has a warranty, and didn’t bother to venture beyond that. The truth is that the quality of a warranty can vary greatly from company to company, so it’s worth putting in the extra time to make sure you’re getting the exact one that works for you. And at the end of the day, an extra hour of researching warranties specifically will seem inconsequential when you save time on unnecessary inconvenience and costs in the long run.

The Pros of Researching Warranties

Because life happens and the tire you thought would last you five-plus years suddenly is wearing quicker than you thought, it pays to have a warranty that will cover you for several situations. Sometimes tires have issues during the manufacturing process and in those unfortunate cases, reputable tire companies offer warranties to reimburse or replace tires within certain time periods or below a certain number of miles driven. Most of the time, these types of warranties are included but be sure to check exactly how long/what you are covered for: ie per miles driven or time passed after purchase. Many people often wonder if warranties will cover you for non manufacturing-related damage like a tire puncture. Check to see if you’ll be covered for more than a materials and workmanship warranty, and if it comes with a road hazard warranty, you’re in luck! This will cover you for accidental damage like puncturing your tire but they are usually also only valid for a limited amount of time after the purchase date. Be sure to ask the salesperson for details and that way you won’t have to scramble looking through the fine print when you’re trying to urgently have a tire repaired or replaced.

Read The Fine Print - CHECK!

When you go over the fine print of a warranty, make sure you also review the process you should take when making a claim. If the tires were on a brand new car then the warranty is usually processed through the car manufacturer that sold you the car, not the tire manufacturer. Once you start dealing with replacement tires, you’ll need to file a claim either through the tire retailer, or sometimes through the tire manufacturer. You can always ask at the time or purchase who you would make the claim through or read through the warranty itself. Sometimes warranties will stipulate that the tires need to have been rotated every few thousand miles for the warranty claim to be valid. And additional costs of mounting, balancing, installation charges and shipping are often not included so it’s important to factor that in. Be sure to keep any proof of alignment and tire rotation with your purchase receipt in order to make the claim process easier to handle.
