We all want to get the most out of our tires so often look for the most versatile types, like all-season, all-terrain and all-weather to avoid having to change them too often. But how prepared do you need to be when purchasing everyday tires? Do you need to make sure they are suitable for all conditions, even the occasional snowfall? The short answer is that unless you live in an area that has predictable and regular snowfall in winter, you don’t need to look for a 3PMSF symbol on your tires. You can get away with all-weather tires or an M+S symbol instead.

What Does the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake Symbol on the Side of a Tire Mean?

The image of three mountain peaks with a snowflake molded into the side of some tires is called the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake Symbol and is sometimes referred to as the “Severe Snow” or “Alpine” symbol, or simply by its acronym 3PMSF. It signifies that the tire has met U.S. Tire Manufacturer Association requirements for traction in severe snow conditions.

What Specific Purpose Is a Three Peak Mountain Snowflake Tire Used For?

Tires labeled with the 3PMSF symbol have been tested for traction and acceleration on medium-packed snow and are made from rubber compounds that keep their flexibility in cold temperatures in order to retain optimal traction and grip. If you live in an area where you don’t have severe winter weather but still travel to areas with slush or moderately packed snow, then a 3PMSF tire is ideal.

Depending on the requirements of your state, province or region, and the type of vehicle you are driving, a 3PMSF tire may also be acceptable in areas requiring traction tires. However, it’s always best to check your area’s laws and regulations, or the laws along the route you plan to travel. In severe winter conditions like ice and hard-packed snow, chains or studded tires may also be required.

The Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) rating on a tire indicates that the tire’s rubber and tread have been tested for traction in severe snow conditions and have met or exceeded those standards set by the US Tire Manufacturer’s Association.

Is the M+S Rating equivalent to a Three Peak Mountain Snowflake?

When it comes to performance in heavy snow, tires with the 3PMSF symbol are significantly superior to those with just an "M+S" (Mud and Snow) rating. While the M+S Rating is given to tires that have tread design features which can help a tire perform better than average in light snow and muddy conditions, an M+S Rating is no guarantee that a tire will perform well in packed snow or freezing temperatures. The 3PMSF rating on a tire indicates that the tire’s rubber and tread have been tested for traction in severe snow conditions and have met or exceeded those standards set by the US Tire Manufacturer’s Association. These tires have to pass actual performance tests on snow. The M+S Rating on the other hand does not involve standardized performance testing. It's largely a manufacturer's self-declaration, therefore M+S ratings are not a reliable indicator of how well a tire will perform in heavy snow.

The M+S stamp on a tire indicates it will have good traction in mud and light snow, but it hasn't been tested in those conditions.

The 3PMSF symbol (sometimes referred to as the Alpine symbol) is assigned to tires that have been rigorously tested in the snow.

In what conditions do I need tires with the 3PMSF symbol?

If you live in an area that regularly experiences heavy snowfall, icy roads, and consistently low temperatures (below 45°F or 7°C), 3PMSF-rated tires are highly recommended. These tires provide significantly better traction in such conditions compared to standard all-season tires. Additionally, if you frequently drive in areas with unmaintained roads or steep inclines during winter, 3PMSF tires will provide a significant safety advantage. If you experience occasional snowfall but not consistently severe winter conditions, all-weather or all-terrain tires with the 3PMSF symbol may be a suitable option, but if you live in a region with prolonged winters and frequent snowfall, dedicated winter tires with the 3PMSF symbol are the best choice.
