What are Mud Terrain Tires?
Mud Terrain tires, also called mud tires, are rugged off-road tires that are intended to be used on light trucks, SUVs and other off-road vehicles. Sometimes they are also referred to as M/T tires for Mud Terrain. They have large spaces between tread blocks that keep mud or other loose material from becoming trapped in the grooves, and an open shoulder design for traction in very extreme conditions, such as mud, sand, gravel, rocks, and wet snow.
Can Mud Tires Be Used On-Road?
Mud tires can be used on road, however since the tread is softer than other off-road tires such as Hybrid or All-Terrain tires, they may wear faster. When choosing tires, two common concerns are if mud terrain tires are good in snow and rain. Not all Mud Terrain tires handle wet roads well and can encounter reduced stability in rain. However, a mud tire with purposefully designed tread grooves, good engineering and quality construction will still perform well in snow and rain. Look for an M/T tire with deep grooves to evacuate water and snow, and a specialized rubber compound to provide good traction in rain, slush and wet snow. For severe snow conditions such as hard packed snow or ice, a 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake Rated winter tire is best.
“Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
What Are The Best Mud Tires?
The best Mud Terrain tires have reinforced sidewalls and rugged construction to protect the tire while driving on rough, potentially sharp terrain. A quality M/T tire will also have tread grooves that are especially designed for driving on wet surfaces. Since Mud tires are often used on larger vehicles such as light trucks, Jeeps®, or larger SUVs that may be used for towing, you may also want to look for tires that are F-Rated and extra-reinforced for carrying heavier off-road vehicles that haul or tow heavy loads.
